Nicole Kaplan

Colorado State University
Information Manager
Fort Collins, CO
My work focuses on designing and using information systems to support scientific data management and interoperability, and to grow long term reliable cyber-infrastructure. I use techniques and approaches in database design, data integration, metadata documentation, curation, standards exchange, computer supported collaboration and information governance to prepare and share data packages of high integrity for applications in science and to the benefit of society.

I began my work at Colorado State University in 1996 conducting ecological research as a graduate student and supervising field crews for the US Long Term Ecological Research Network Shortgrass Steppe LTER site. In 2002, I expanded my role in the SGS-LTER program, as Information Manager, with a new emphasis on the design and enactment of systems and standards to support collaborative work on the integration, analysis, and integrity of data from the field. I am interested in how documentation, publication of data packages, and creation of digital collections from long-term research can contribute to new findings resulting from synthesis of information and ideas, and bring transparency to the process and stories of research.

Today, I continue to embrace my role as good steward of data and information and contribute to data management plans, the design of relational databases for metadata documentation, dynamic websites for data access and re-use, and content management systems for community forums and information exchange for various projects at Colorado State University.
